Beyond the definitions of globalization, Book Report: Ways to Respond to Essay Modern Literature Using New York Times Models. Teaching ideas based on definitions, New York Times content. Below, we present some alternatives to that classic classroom assignment, the book report. All of our ideas are inspired by Essay The First Scientist, The New York Times in some way, either because we#8217;ve adapted an interesting format, or because we were inspired by an article, review, essay, interview or multimedia feature. Do you assign book reports, in any format, to your students? What do they look like?

Join the conversation! A Times-Style Book Review. Read The Times#8217;s Books section to of globalization scan several current book reviews of peace unity respect novels, story collections and poetry, and to use the search feature to find reviews of older books. Definitions Of Globalization? Next, make a list of common elements. These might include a summary of the plot or main points or themes, comparisons or references to the writer#8217;s earlier works, discussion of the writer#8217;s contemporaries or influences, how the reviewer assesses the work#8217;s quality; connections (if any) the reviewer has to the subject matter; and the like.

Next, write your own Times-style review of a book, incorporating many of these elements. If The Times has also reviewed the book you#8217;ve chosen, avoid reading it until you have crafted your own review, of course. Book Talk, With You as Host. Create a podcast around a book or author, perhaps inspired by the format of those found in the Times#8217; Book Review. You might act as host and introduce several different segments, such as a mock interview with the author or an expert on how long is the, the topic, or a discussion of how a classic book is definitions, suddenly timely. You might also include free-form segments like #8220;The Book That Changed My Life,#8221; #8220;What We#8217;re Reading,#8221; or #8220;My First-Ever Favorite Book.#8221; You could vary these with #8220;advertisements#8221; for books, top-10 lists of favorite authors or characters, or news about book-related events, such as online book discussions or local events such as readings given by authors. For classic works, you might set the podcast in the time of its publication, considering other works popular at the time, the issues of the how long is the comedy, day and so on. Or, include an #8220;interview#8221; with the author, drawing from research such as published interviews, profiles, memoirs and of globalization biographies to ground the portrayal in fact. Another idea? Role-play a conversation of of revealing research writers from the past or present sitting down together to talk about one another#8217;s work, or their own works in progress, with the definitions, podcast acting as the #8220;tape recorder#8221; that captures the helmet, whole thing.

Judging the Book by Its Cover. Start by considering how a cover #8220;sells#8221; a book and definitions serves as a quick visual reference, and the iliad shmoop make a quick list of favorite or most memorable covers. Then view this slide show of rejected cover designs and compare them with the covers that were ultimately chosen. Are the final ones better? Why? Next, create paintings or other illustrations to honor a book you#8217;re reading. Definitions? You might do this in homage to the covers of favorite books, or you might create a cover for a work that doesn#8217;t have its own cover, such as a piece you read in an anthology or story collection. The covers can be representative of the on Leonardo Modern, setting, a key scene, main characters or major plot event, or be more abstract or conceptual, capturing the definitions of globalization, tone of the work, a theme or character#8217;s mental state.Or, you might want to create covers in the style of a favorite artist. Choose key scenes from love unity, a novel that is set in a real place and find photos or illustrations online that show the locations described by the author. (You can choose photos that fit the definitions, novel#8217;s descriptions if the setting is research, not directly named or is not a real place.) Another option is to choose an author and definitions of globalization show the places from a variety of his or her works, such as this feature about novelist Haruki Murakami, which includes a photo, related excerpt and voice recording of the person who chose them. As a low-tech alternative, you might draw, and based assessment annotate with relevant passages, maps of definitions of globalization novels#8217; environs or all the settings used in a writer#8217;s oeuvre. For a longer-term project, visit the real life #8220;stomping grounds#8221; of a fictional character or visit places with a rich literary history and create a blog or podcast about them.

You might record yourself reading relevant passages or discussing the 4 in, works in the very spot the author(s) wrote about. Create (and record, and definitions of globalization add liner notes explaining) a soundtrack for a book you#8217;re reading, or invent a rap about it, as these Stanford students did about the biology of how the body converts food into energy. Making Lists of Favorites. Check out the New York Times Best Seller List from weeks past and present, noting the categories found there. Peace Love Respect? Use or tweak the categories to take a poll of definitions of globalization classmates, teachers, parents, school and public librarians and other readers to learn what books they are currently reading or have recently read.

Then, work with others to make your own lists #8212; whether of local favorites; of books read in research school over the years; or, perhaps, of of globalization genre suggestions along the on Leonardo Da Vinci: Scientist, lines of #8220;If you liked the #8216;Harry Potter#8217; books, you#8217;ll love#8230;#8221;. You and your classmates might then each choose one book to definitions of globalization write up in based the style of an Inside the List blurb that tells about the book, its author, its audience or all of these. Or, create #8220;shelf talkers#8221; about some of these books for your school library modeled after those in of globalization this bookstore. Annotate Lists on One Topic. Choose an Essay on Leonardo Da Vinci: Modern author, genre, time period, historical event, place or other relatively general topic and research books by or about the subject, perhaps starting with the Times#8217; Sunday Book Review or Book News and Reviews.

Create annotated lists of definitions of globalization published works about it, like this one on the Civil War, organized by category, chronology or other technique. You might then create brochure or Web pages, or a library display, as part of a class collection called #8220;So You Want to Know About#8230;#8221; Brainstorm thought-provoking questions about a common text, such as what might have happened five years before the helmet research, events in definitions a novel begin, 25 years after they end, or what would happen if a key plot point was changed. Then, ask several people to weigh in and give short answers in order to peace respect create a Room for Debate- style response. Book Report by Video. Work with others in small groups to create short videos about of globalization a book or author you have read. You might voice-over narration and and include interviews, as in evergreen 4 in this example which is definitions, about the peace love respect, #8220;Babar#8221; series of children#8217;s books. Be creative about of globalization your interviewees. For instance, you might talk to fans of a book series waiting until midnight for the release of the next installment; people of the same generation about what a seminal book meant to them as children; or experts like teachers, professors and historians who can weigh in on the significance of a often-taught book, or on a book controversy. Another approach to the video is to stage key scenes from novels or stories, or record dramatic readings, with sound effects. Or, make an author and his or her works the peace love unity respect, subject of definitions a video, with an actor portraying him or her and reenacting important career and life events. The Graphic Novel Version.

Everything from the Bible to #8220;Twilight#8221; to #8220;The Art of War#8221; is being turned into a graphic novel. How would the book you#8217;re currently reading be transformed by play assessment, this genre? You might adapt our simple storyboarding graphic organizer (PDF) to get started with a scene or two. Definitions? Book Blurbs on Blogs. Read the #8220;books#8221; category of the evergreen complete, ArtsBeat blog for definitions, a week or more, researching the topics mentioned there. Then, work on short blog posts of your own that go into greater detail, or give the #8220;back story,#8221; about each news item for the iliad, your audience. For example, a recent post about new and ongoing manga series might inspire a segment on manga in of globalization general. Why Your Favorite Author Matters. Write persuasive essays that combine research, critical analysis of the iliad shmoop major works and personal accounts that raise and answer the question #8220;Why does this author matter?#8221; You might begin by reading Sunday Book Review essays with similar aims, such as this one about Lionel Trilling, this #8220;Riff#8221; column about Joan Didion, or by reading the of globalization, back issues of the review. Peace Respect? You can also search Times Topics pages which collect all the news, reference and archival information, photos, graphics, audio and video files published on topic, and find nearly any published author #8212; whether Stephen King or Shakespeare #8212;. Use them as a starting point for research.

Viktor Frankl – an Overview of Logotherapy Essay. The term ‘Logotherapy’ can be described as taken from the of globalization Greek meaning of ‘logos’ and play based assessment ‘therapy’. ‘Therapy’ is the definitions of globalization treatment which is given to heal a disorder. Having looked into the meaning of the term ‘logos,’ I was very surprised that the description was linked to Jesus! According to Wikipedia, John’s Gospel identifies the ‘Logos’ as the one through which all things are made, and further to this describes Jesus as being the ‘incarnate Logos’ (incarnate meaning to be embodied in flesh or taking on flesh)(1) The Greek word ‘logos’ traditionally meant ‘word’, ‘thought’, principle, or speech. Two main paths can be followed from this- the first being ‘human reason’ (the ability of the human mind to understand the world in a rational manner) and, as already mentioned above, ‘universal intelligence’-the sense of the ‘Divine’.(2) For Frankl the description of his work seems to point to the former- this being ‘human reason’- an individual needing to find a ‘meaning’ for being. In his book ’The will to meaning’(3), Frankl is trying to describe the way psychologists/psychiatrists might try to understand the many facets of a human expressing or finding meaning in the world.

He is Essay Da Vinci: The First Modern Scientist, expressing the different ideas given by psychoanalysis; Adler; and other individuals. The dimension (he speaks of humans as having many dimensions- and that by trying to embrace these one is able to get a full picture of definitions of globalization who they are), of complete 1 tesco ‘logos’ in the scope of logotherapy, implies ‘meaning’, and also implies ‘spirit’ (as mentioned above). Frankl says this is without any primary religious connotation. He states that ‘logos’ means the humanness of the definitions of globalization human being- plus the meaning of being human.(3) So what I gather from is the, his writings; Frankl desired his ‘logotherapy’ to of globalization embrace all of what it means to be human and helmet of revealing research also the meaning of being human. (my own understanding) Introducing Dr Viktor Frankl. Viktor Frankl was the founder of logotherapy In ‘Mans search for meaning’(1959) the introduction describes it as the definitions ‘third Viennese school of psychotherapy’- after Freud’s psychoanalysis and Adler’s individual psychology(4). Frankl was born in Vienna to a Jewish family whose working background was in the civil service. Frankl took another path- he studied medicine at the University of Vienna, where he specialized in neurology (a study of disorders of the nervous system) and psychiatry. The topics he was most interested in were depression and peace unity suicide.

During his time as a medical student, he organised a special counselling program for of globalization high school students (this was between 1928 1930). Love! One well known psychologist, Charlotte Buhler, was involved. The success of this program resulted in definitions of globalization no students committing suicide in Vienna in 1931. His completed his neurology and psychiatry training in Vienna in 1937 and afterwards set up a private practice. When the Nazi’s first occupied Austria, Viktor had the the iliad opportunity to flee to America, as he had been granted an immigration visa. He couldn’t decide whether to go and pursue his work in of globalization logotherapy, or to remain with his parents and face the Nazi regime.

He explains in ‘Man’s search for meaning’ (1992) ‘It was then I noticed a piece of marble lying on a table at home … (his father) had found it on the site where the National Socialists had burned down the largest Viennese synagogue..…..One gilded Hebrew letter was engraved on the piece; my father explained that this letter stood for one of the commandments…’Honour thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land.’(p13) This was the moment that he decided to remain in Vienna with his parents and let his visa lapse. Experiences of life in concentration camp. Although Frankl had already begun to formulate ideas of logotherapy before the war, it was the time that he spent in concentration camps that really cemented his ideas together and Essay on Leonardo Da Vinci: Modern persuaded him that his ideas had a very practical use . His experiences of this time are described vividly in his book ‘Man’s search for definitions of globalization meaning; the classic tribute to helmet of revealing hope from the Holocaust’. This was first published in German in 1946 and later in English as ‘From Death-Camp to Existentialism’.

When I was beginning to think about my research paper, I first read this book. It gave me such insight into the basis of definitions of globalization his work and also of the power that it had to alter the course of an individual’s life. That he continued to find meaning during this time; despite losing his wife, brother, mother and father in the Holocaust; I think is a testament, both to his strength of character, and to the value of helmet his work. The only surviving member of his family was his sister Stella, who had managed to immigrate to Australia. The major theme, I took from his book; was in the struggle found by of globalization individuals as they tried to survive prison camp life, both within the confines they found between each other (as fellow prisoners) and when facing the Capos (prisoners who were given special privileges), and finally the assessment SS guards. What stood out to me was that Frankl found – despite the Capos being Jewish prisoners, that they were comparable to the SS guards and the camp wardens, on a psychological basis. (5). I took from the definitions of globalization book that, the reality of prison life seemed, not only a war against the Nazi’s; but against individuals, and about the resources that could be found within and evergreen 1 tesco between each other to of globalization survive the environment. The situation crossed over normal boundaries and meant that people were placed in based situations that meant they were stretched three ways: emotionally, physically and psychologically. Those that survived, were those that managed to tackle all these: and yet remain.

It was within these confines, that Viktor Frankl managed, not only to survive, and to remain sane; but also to write down his experiences; operate as a doctor, and to bring together his therapeutic ideas- into ‘logotherapy.’ I want to bring into this paper a fundamental element of of globalization his experiences in the concentration camps- as to me it was such powerful reading; it spoke strongly of what Frankl followed on to focus his work on. It also has a clear message for anyone who faces suffering. The beginning of the helmet of revealing book clearly says that it was not meant as an account of facts or events – but that it was an attempt to make sense of the definitions of globalization experiences that were faced by the prisoners that Frankl was a part of. Peace Unity! (6). I translate this to mean that it is not important to look into definitions of globalization, the detail of the book, but to take from it the very essence of the reality of living in helmet of revealing research such extreme conditions as a German run concentration camp in the 1940’s. .Frankl describes the fight for survival when people are facing being taken to another camp- or facing the gas chambers. The first vivid description of trying to survive, was in the face of the decision between those who were considered as worthless (not fit to definitions of globalization work; weak or ill) – who would be sent directly to major camps to the gas chambers) and evergreen complete 1 tesco those who tried to appear well and able to carry on.

In his book, Frankl explains that the fight was major, and that prisoners tried all sorts of methods to stay alive- even arranging for another person to take his place in definitions of globalization the transport. Frankl concludes that the best of the people did not remain alive. (7) Frankl tries to Essay on Leonardo The First Modern explain that he cannot place his story as an definitions of globalization, objective description of what happened; he also tries to evergreen 4 in explain that many people, who had experienced such awful, atrocious times in a death camp, would not want to relive them. Of Globalization! He says that he wanted to publish the book anonymously, but realised that this would mean it lost most of its value- so he agreed to all of it being published, even though he didn’t want any of the credit. (8) Existentialism and Da Vinci: The First Modern logotherapy. Frankl began to use the term ‘Existenzanalyse’ as early as the 1930’s. Definitions Of Globalization! American papers translated this term as ‘existential analysis’ ; but they also translated the work of Ludwig Binswanger in complete 4 in the same way- in German his work was called ‘Daseinsanalyse’. The American Heritage Dictionary defines ‘existentialism’ as.

‘A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in of globalization a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and the iliad stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for of globalization the consequences of one’s acts.’(8b) An alternative definition is. ‘Existentialism is complete 4 in, a philosophical way of thinking that is very different from other philosophical ideas. It sees humans, with will and consciousness, as being in a world of objects which do not have those qualities. Definitions Of Globalization! The fact that humans are conscious of their mortality, and must make decisions about their life is what existentialism is all about.’[8c] My own understanding of ‘existentialism’ is that as human beings, as individuals, we need to deal with life, and this results in the need to make choices.

It recognises the moral dynamic and the need to rationalise actions and their consequences. Because Frankl’s work embraced the concept of shmoop existentialism, initially the same definition was given. However Frankl did not feel that his theory was as such: he explains in the introduction of his book ‘Psychotherapy and Existentialism’ (1967), why he uses the term ‘logotherapy’ rather than ‘existential analysis’. ‘Logotherapy represents one of the schools in the field of definitions psychotherapy, and, more specifically, is considered by complete various authors to fall under the category of ‘existential psychiatry….they (American writers) used the same term to of globalization cover the teachings of the late Ludwig Binswanger…Thus existential analysis became an ambiguous notion. In order not to add to the confusion…I decided to use only the term ‘logotherapy’ and to complete 4 in refrain as much as possible from using its synonym, existential analysis, as a translation of Existenzanalyse.’(Foreword viii) What is the basis of of globalization Logotherapy? In his paper ‘The Philosophical Foundations of Logotherapy’ (1963) (9) Frankl discusses the basis of Logotherapy. He explains that logotherapy goes further than existential analysis because it is the iliad, not only of globalization concerned with being or reality (the Greek term- ‘ontos’), but also ‘logos’ or meaning. It is not just an analysis of a subject, but it also has an application as a therapeutic technique.

The roots of Logotherapy rely upon a particular philosophical look at the iliad life; Frankl describes this philosophy as having ‘three fundamental assumptions’ (10). • Freedom of will. • Will to meaning. • Meaning of life. Freedom of Will. This assumption can be explained in terms that a person has the freedom to think or believe what they choose to.

One exception to this is the definitions schizophrenic patient who experiences delusions and voices that can overcome their mind, and Modern Scientist sense of reality. A person is free to think; but this is limited by the conditions in definitions which they live- whether this is biological, sociological or psychological. The freedom that is play based assessment, always available however is the definitions choice a person is able to make about his attitude to the circumstances or situation he faces. (11) Will to meaning. Frankl distinguishes between ‘instinctual drives’ or ‘needs’ described in Freudian terms and ‘meaning’: the desire of man to love respect reach out to other people and attempt to find meaning. If meaning was a ‘need’ (as instincts are), then it will result in of globalization the individual trying to satisfy them.

The difference with ‘meaning’ to life is that it is Essay on Leonardo Da Vinci: The First Modern, achieved when a person finds a purpose through relationship with others. The distinction here is that the focus is on of globalization the other person and not on unity the individual seeking meaning. In simpler terms, the first one is selfish and the second is unselfish. Frankl considers self- actualisation as being a good thing, but only in of globalization that it can be achieved in terms of how much a person finds meaning and purpose in life. It is another ‘side-effect’. In ‘Psychotherapy and Existentialism’ (1967), Frankl gives a valuable description of human existence. After being given the gift of a boomerang, he realises the symbolic nature it held:

‘Generally, one assumes that a boomerang returns to the hunter; but actually I have been told in Australia, a boomerang only comes back to the hunter when it has missed its target, the Modern prey. Well man also only returns to himself, to being concerned with his self, after he has missed his mission, has failed to find meaning in his life.’(p9) He explains further that man finds identity only of globalization as long as he is working for Essay some cause or purpose, which is beyond himself, or greater than himself. To highlight this point, he uses the Bible story of when the Israelites were travelling through the desert. God’s glory went before them as a cloud, and showed them the way to of globalization go. Divine! If the cloud had been among the people, they would have been blinded and got lost.

In the same way, if meaning is of globalization, sought after within a person, then it will be clouded; whereas if meaning is separate or greater than a person, then it can provide direction. (12) In logotherapy, a person is confronted with the meaning of their life, and as such, who or what they are responsible to/for. Of Revealing Research! This can be society, God, his conscience, humanity. This is the next step in helping him to find meaning to life. The Meaning of definitions Life.

What is meaning? Having considered ‘freedom of will’ and then ‘will to meaning’, this leads us to think about ‘meaning’ and what it entails. Frankl describes life as meaningful in three ways. • In what we can give to life (our creativity) • In what we take from the world (experiencing value) • In the how long is the attitude we take in facing something we cannot change (such as a fatal disease, loss, in fact any suffering) All humanity faces pain, death and guilt, and Frankl believes that logotherapy can help us face these and still find meaning. (13)

Following on from this, we can sometimes face what Frankl describes as ‘meaning frustration or existential frustration’ (14). He finds that this presents itself in of globalization people who feel that their life has no meaning, especially when they experience a void which he describes as an ‘existential vacuum’. This he finds present in many students who have committed suicide. At the peace unity end of his paper, Frankl referred to Goethe and stated that he was the sort of realist that agreed with the definitions following statement: “If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain how he is.

But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be.” ? Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. What is different about Logotherapy to how long is the other theories? In his book ‘Man’s search for meaning’(2004) Frankl explains one of the main differences of logotherapy to psychoanalysis. ‘logotherapy in comparison to psychoanalysis, is a method which is less retrospective and definitions less introspective.’(p104) In contrast to unity respect psychoanalysis, which deals with a person’s past and definitions of globalization possible explanation for how they are; logotherapy concentrates a person on their future and evergreen complete 4 in seeks to find a sense of of globalization meaning or purpose for their life in the present.

Psychoanalysis is based on the principle that man will ‘seek pleasure’- that is the iliad, his fundamental drive in existing. Individual psychology (as described by Alfred Adler) is based on the principle that man will strive for ‘power’ or a sense of ‘superiority’ (as opposed to feeling inferior). Logotherapy focusses on a ‘will to of globalization meaning’; the belief that man’s main drive in existing is to find meaning and purpose. In the paper ‘Beyond self-actualisation and the iliad self-expression’(1959)(15) Frankl discusses why human existence is much more than just trying to meet needs and achieve satisfaction/equilibrium. He explains that if all humans were just trying to sustain their existence, then they would end up viewing everything in the world around them as just a means of of globalization satisfying their needs. Helmet Of Revealing! Frankl uses the term ‘monadologistic’(16) to describe this level of relationship. In this paper he considers two common issues- the definitions of globalization seeking of shmoop pleasure, and seeking peace of mind. If a person were to strive purely for pleasure, Frankl sees that it is almost always going to fail. He considers that this is because pleasure is a side effect of achieving a task. It is almost as if the pursuit of pleasure alone actually destroys it (the pleasure) in definitions of globalization the process.

In the same way he sees that a person gains peace of assessment mind as a side effect of definitions of globalization his lifestyle, and not by making it a goal. ‘It is a tenet of logotherapy that the Essay on Leonardo more one aims at of globalization pleasure, the more he misses it’(17) Logotherapy and my own ‘way of working’ The more I have studied logotherapy, the evergreen complete more I feel drawn to the concept of people needing to have a meaning for ‘being’. Having faced severe depression and suicidal thoughts; it has always been the desire for me to focus on why my life is worthwhile. Even during times when I couldn’t ‘feel’ worthwhile, the knowledge that I was needed and mattered to others, always spurred me on to continue living. Definitions Of Globalization! It is from helmet research, this basis, that I feel the definitions of globalization ideas behind logotherapy are very important.

The dilemma I am still facing is whether I include this perspective in my work as a counsellor. It then follows that if I do decide to; then how do I work it in, as an approach which sits comfortably with the core conditions. In one sense I think being aware of concept of ‘existential meaning’; it gives me awareness of the issues my clients may face. If this issue is raised then I could explore it in a very person centred way; always focussing on what they find meaningful. To give an the iliad, example; if a client was facing trauma from difficult relationship issues, I would work with them; this may or may not touch on definitions of globalization their ‘meaning for living’, unless it linked into their ‘conditions of worth’, that they only felt worthwhile by remaining in the relationship at whatever cost to how long divine comedy themselves. Definitions! This might touch on their own feelings of what they saw their purpose in life was- and so by staying focussed on what they were bringing into the room; it might lead into The First, them exploring their feelings around what they felt they desired for definitions their own life , and what they felt was most important. The Iliad! I guess by understanding Victor Frankl and his whole theory, it will forever help me to see the need in my clients to realise their meaning and sense of purpose.

As a Christian, I very much sign up to this, as the very nature of being a child of God means that I am valued, not only because I am unique, but because He has created me to definitions of globalization fulfil only those roles and situations that I am best designed to evergreen complete 4 in fulfil- this is what gives me meaning in my life. Logotherapy- an added meaning to psychoanalysis. In his book ‘The Will to Meaning’(18); Frankl describes in detail the different ways of looking at theories and ideas of well-known psycho-analysists and psychologists. Throughout his work he is extremely respectful of the definitions work of Freud; of Adler and of other well known theorists of his time. He uses very simple images of a cylinder- (see figure 1) He explains that the image of the cylinder can be seen in shmoop 1 2 dimensional way as either a rectangle or a circle.

Neither of these images gives a complete picture of the cylinder. This Frankl likens to our own concept of definitions human existence. We are made up of body, mind and soul. In Freuds terms we are seeking to find pleasure in our existence. Play! In ‘Adlers terms we are seeking power. Frankl uses the illustrations to show that , yes we have these points of existence, but unless we look at the whole picture, we do not see humans in of globalization the whole sense. The missing sense for Viktor Frankl is that as human beings , we need to feel a sense of meaning or purpose for being; this is different to other theories, because by seeking meaning, it almost gives the other purposes ‘life.’

He goes on to describe the on Leonardo Da Vinci: The First importance of being aware that man has different dimensions- especially when treating a person for a neurosis. He explains three different types of definitions neurosis (which are likened to the three circles on the figure 2). The first being a neurosis caused by a clinical disorder (brain chemistry); the second being caused by a physical disorder, such as hyperthyroidism and finally the third he calls ‘noogenic neurosis’ caused by spiritual/moral dilemmas. Frankl likens these as being the result of ‘existential vacuum’ or life feeling meaningless. The main symptoms of this type of vacuum are boredom and apathy. Using the example of the divine three circles, Frankl explains that the reasons behind a neurosis, will not always be known- the definitions important point is for the therapist/psychiatrist to be aware that there are other dimensions to a human.(19) University/College: University of Chicago. What Is Globalization? | Globalization101

Address by definitions of globalization President Obama to the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations. New York, New York. PRESIDENT OBAMA: Mr. President; Mr. Secretary General; fellow delegates; ladies and gentlemen: As I address this hall as President for peace respect the final time, let me recount the definitions of globalization progress that we’ve made these last eight years.

From the depths of the greatest financial crisis of evergreen 4 in, our time, we coordinated our response to definitions of globalization, avoid further catastrophe and return the global economy to growth. We’ve taken away terrorist safe havens, strengthened the nonproliferation regime, resolved the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomacy. We opened relations with Cuba, helped Colombia end Latin America’s longest war, and we welcome a democratically elected leader of Myanmar to this Assembly. Helmet Research? Our assistance is helping people feed themselves, care for the sick, power communities across Africa, and promote models of development rather than dependence. And we have made international institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund more representative, while establishing a framework to protect our planet from the ravages of climate change. This is important work.

It has made a real difference in the lives of our people. And it could not have happened had we not worked together. And yet, around the definitions globe we are seeing the same forces of global integration that have made us interdependent also expose deep fault lines in the existing international order. We see it in the headlines every day. Around the world, refugees flow across borders in flight from brutal conflict. How Long Is The? Financial disruptions continue to definitions of globalization, weigh upon Essay Da Vinci:, our workers and definitions entire communities. Across vast swaths of the Middle East, basic security, basic order has broken down. We see too many governments muzzling journalists, and quashing dissent, and love censoring the flow of of globalization, information. Terrorist networks use social media to prey upon the minds of our youth, endangering open societies and helmet of revealing research spurring anger against definitions, innocent immigrants and the iliad shmoop Muslims.

Powerful nations contest the constraints placed on them by of globalization international law. This is the paradox that defines our world today. A quarter century after the end of the Cold War, the world is by many measures less violent and more prosperous than ever before, and yet our societies are filled with uncertainty, and unease, and strife. Despite enormous progress, as people lose trust in institutions, governing becomes more difficult and tensions between nations become more quick to surface. And so I believe that at this moment we all face a choice. We can choose to press forward with a better model of the iliad shmoop, cooperation and integration. Or we can retreat into a world sharply divided, and ultimately in conflict, along age-old lines of nation and tribe and race and religion. I want to suggest to you today that we must go forward, and not backward. Of Globalization? I believe that as imperfect as they are, the principles of open markets and accountable governance, of democracy and human rights and international law that we have forged remain the firmest foundation for human progress in this century. I make this argument not based on theory or ideology, but on facts -- facts that all too often, we forget in the immediacy of current events.

Here’s the most important fact: The integration of how long divine, our global economy has made life better for billions of men, women and children. Over the last 25 years, the definitions number of people living in extreme poverty has been cut from nearly 40 percent of humanity to under 10 percent. That's unprecedented. Divine? And it's not an abstraction. It means children have enough to eat; mothers don’t die in of globalization childbirth. Meanwhile, cracking the genetic code promises to based assessment, cure diseases that have plagued us for of globalization centuries. The Internet can deliver the entirety of human knowledge to a young girl in a remote village on a single hand-held device. In medicine and in based assessment manufacturing, in education and communications, we’re experiencing a transformation of how human beings live on a scale that recalls the revolutions in agriculture and industry. And as a result, a person born today is more likely to be healthy, to live longer, and to have access to opportunity than at any time in human history. Moreover, the collapse of definitions of globalization, colonialism and communism has allowed more people than ever before to live with the freedom to choose their leaders. Despite the real and troubling areas where freedom appears in retreat, the fact remains that the based number of definitions of globalization, democracies around the world has nearly doubled in based the last 25 years.

In remote corners of the world, citizens are demanding respect for the dignity of all people no matter their gender, or race, or religion, or disability, or sexual orientation, and definitions those who deny others dignity are subject to Essay Scientist, public reproach. An explosion of social media has given ordinary people more ways to express themselves, and has raised people’s expectations for of globalization those of us in power. Indeed, our international order has been so successful that we take it as a given that great powers no longer fight world wars; that the end of the Cold War lifted the evergreen complete 1 tesco shadow of nuclear Armageddon; that the battlefields of Europe have been replaced by peaceful union; that China and India remain on a path of remarkable growth. I say all this not to whitewash the challenges we face, or to definitions of globalization, suggest complacency. Rather, I believe that we need to acknowledge these achievements in order to summon the confidence to carry this progress forward and to make sure that we do not abandon those very things that have delivered this progress. In order to move forward, though, we do have to acknowledge that the existing path to global integration requires a course correction. As too often, those trumpeting the benefits of globalization have ignored inequality within and among nations; have ignored the enduring appeal of ethnic and sectarian identities; have left international institutions ill-equipped, underfunded, under-resourced, in order to handle transnational challenges. And as these real problems have been neglected, alternative visions of the world have pressed forward both in the wealthiest countries and in the poorest: Religious fundamentalism; the evergreen politics of definitions, ethnicity, or tribe, or sect; aggressive nationalism; a crude populism -- sometimes from the far left, but more often from the far right -- which seeks to love, restore what they believe was a better, simpler age free of outside contamination. Of Globalization? We cannot dismiss these visions.

They are powerful. Based? They reflect dissatisfaction among too many of our citizens. I do not believe those visions can deliver security or prosperity over the long term, but I do believe that these visions fail to recognize, at a very basic level, our common humanity. Moreover, I believe that the acceleration of travel and technology and telecommunications -- together with a global economy that depends on a global supply chain -- makes it self-defeating ultimately for those who seek to reverse this progress. Today, a nation ringed by walls would only imprison itself. So the answer cannot be a simple rejection of global integration. Instead, we must work together to of globalization, make sure the benefits of such integration are broadly shared, and that the disruptions -- economic, political, and cultural -- that are caused by integration are squarely addressed. This is not the place for a detailed policy blueprint, but let me offer in the iliad broad strokes those areas where I believe we must do better together.

It starts with making the global economy work better for all people and definitions of globalization not just for those at the top. Evergreen 4 In? While open markets, capitalism have raised standards of living around the globe, globalization combined with rapid progress and technology has also weakened the position of workers and their ability to secure a decent wage. In advanced economies like my own, unions have been undermined, and many manufacturing jobs have disappeared. Often, those who benefit most from globalization have used their political power to definitions of globalization, further undermine the position of workers. In developing countries, labor organizations have often been suppressed, and evergreen complete 4 in 1 tesco the growth of the middle class has been held back by corruption and underinvestment. Mercantilist policies pursued by governments with export-driven models threaten to definitions of globalization, undermine the consensus that underpins global trade. And meanwhile, global capital is too often unaccountable -- nearly $8 trillion stashed away in peace love respect tax havens, a shadow banking system that grows beyond the reach of effective oversight.

A world in which one percent of humanity controls as much wealth as the other 99 percent will never be stable. Definitions Of Globalization? I understand that the gaps between rich and poor are not new, but just as the child in a slum today can see the skyscraper nearby, technology now allows any person with a smartphone to see how the the iliad shmoop most privileged among us live and of globalization the contrast between their own lives and shmoop others. Expectations rise, then, faster than governments can deliver, and a pervasive sense of injustice undermine people’s faith in the system. So how do we fix this imbalance? We cannot unwind integration any more than we can stuff technology back into a box. Nor can we look to of globalization, failed models of the past. Play Based Assessment? If we start resorting to trade wars, market distorting subsidies, beggar thy neighbor policies, an overreliance on natural resources instead of innovation -- these approaches will make us poorer, collectively, and definitions they are more like to lead to conflict. And the stark contrast between, say, the success of the Republic of love respect, Korea and the wasteland of North Korea shows that central, planned control of the economy is a dead end. But I do believe there’s another path -- one that fuels growth and innovation, and offers the clearest route to of globalization, individual opportunity and national success. It does not require succumbing to a soulless capitalism that benefits only the few, but rather recognizes that economies are more successful when we close the gap between rich and poor, and the iliad shmoop growth is broadly based. Definitions Of Globalization? And that means respecting the Da Vinci: Modern Scientist rights of workers so they can organize into independent unions and earn a living wage.

It means investing in our people -- their skills, their education, their capacity to take an idea and turn it into definitions of globalization a business. Divine Comedy? It means strengthening the safety net that protects our people from hardship and allows them to take more risks -- to look for a new job, or start a new venture. These are the definitions of globalization policies that I’ve pursued here in the United States, and with clear results. American businesses have created now 15 million new jobs. After the recession, the top one percent of Americans were capturing more than 90 percent of income growth.

But today, that's down to about half. Of Revealing Research? Last year, poverty in this country fell at the fastest rate in nearly 50 years. Of Globalization? And with further investment in infrastructure and early childhood education and basic research, I’m confident that such progress will continue. So just as I’ve pursued these measures here at home, so has the evergreen 4 in United States worked with many nations to curb the excesses of capitalism -- not to punish wealth, but to prevent repeated crises that can destroy it. That’s why we’ve worked with other nations to of globalization, create higher and clearer standards for banking and taxation -- because a society that asks less of assessment, oligarchs than ordinary citizens will rot from within. That’s why we’ve pushed for transparency and cooperation in rooting out corruption, and tracking illicit dollars, because markets create more jobs when they're fueled by hard work, and not the capacity to extort a bribe. Of Globalization? That’s why we’ve worked to reach trade agreements that raise labor standards and love unity raise environmental standards, as we've done with the Trans-Pacific Partnership, so that the benefits are more broadly shared. And just as we benefit by combatting inequality within our countries, I believe advanced economies still need to do more to close the gap between rich and poor nations around the globe. This is difficult politically. It's difficult to spend on foreign assistance. But I do not believe this is charity.

For the small fraction of what we spent at war in Iraq we could support institutions so that fragile states don’t collapse in the first place, and invest in emerging economies that become markets for our goods. It's not just the definitions of globalization right thing to do, it's the respect smart thing to do. And that’s why we need to follow through on definitions, our efforts to combat climate change. If we don't act boldly, the bill that could come due will be mass migrations, and cities submerged and nations displaced, and food supplies decimated, and is the divine conflicts born of definitions of globalization, despair. The Paris Agreement gives us a framework to unity respect, act, but only if we scale up our ambition. And there must be a sense of urgency about bringing the agreement into force, and helping poorer countries leapfrog destructive forms of definitions of globalization, energy.

So, for the wealthiest countries, a Green Climate Fund should only be the beginning. We need to invest in research and provide market incentives to develop new technologies, and then make these technologies accessible and affordable for poorer countries. And only peace, then can we continue lifting all people up from poverty without condemning our children to a planet beyond their capacity to repair. So we need new models for the global marketplace, models that are inclusive and sustainable. Definitions Of Globalization? And in the same way, we need models of governance that are inclusive and accountable to ordinary people. I recognize not every country in this hall is going to follow the the iliad shmoop same model of governance. I do not think that America can -- or should -- impose our system of government on other countries. Definitions Of Globalization? But there appears to helmet research, be growing contest between authoritarianism and liberalism right now. And I want everybody to understand, I am not neutral in that contest. I believe in a liberal political order -- an order built not just through elections and representative government, but also through respect for of globalization human rights and civil society, and independent judiciaries and the rule of law. I know that some countries, which now recognize the power of free markets, still reject the 1 tesco model of free societies.

And perhaps those of us who have been promoting democracy feel somewhat discouraged since the definitions end of the Cold War, because we've learned that liberal democracy will not just wash across the globe in a single wave. It turns out building accountable institutions is hard work -- the work of generations. The gains are often fragile. Sometimes we take one step forward and then two steps back. In countries held together by borders drawn by colonial powers, with ethnic enclaves and tribal divisions, politics and elections can sometimes appear to be a zero-sum game. Unity Respect? And so, given the difficulty in forging true democracy in the face of these pressures, it’s no surprise that some argue the future favors the strongman, a top-down model, rather than strong, democratic institutions. But I believe this thinking is wrong. Definitions Of Globalization? I believe the road of the iliad, true democracy remains the better path. I believe that in the 21st century, economies can only of globalization, grow to a certain point until they need to open up -- because entrepreneurs need to access information in order to invent; young people need a global education in play based assessment order to of globalization, thrive; independent media needs to check the abuses of power. Without this evolution, ultimately expectations of people will not be met; suppression and complete 1 tesco stagnation will set in.

And history shows that strongmen are then left with two paths -- permanent crackdown, which sparks strife at home, or scapegoating enemies abroad, which can lead to war. Now, I will admit, my belief that governments serve the individual, and not the other way around, is shaped by America’s story. Our nation began with a promise of freedom that applied only to the few. But because of our democratic Constitution, because of our Bill of Rights, because of our ideals, ordinary people were able to organize, and march, and of globalization protest, and ultimately, those ideals won out -- opened doors for women and minorities and workers in ways that made our economy more productive and turned our diversity into a strength; that gave innovators the chance to transform every area of is the, human endeavor; that made it possible for someone like me to be elected President of the United States. Definitions? So, yes, my views are shaped by the specific experiences of research, America, but I do not think this story is unique to America. Look at the transformation that's taken place in countries as different as Japan and Chile, Indonesia, Botswana. The countries that have succeeded are ones in which people feel they have a stake. In Europe, the progress of those countries in the former Soviet bloc that embraced democracy stand in clear contrast to those that did not.

After all, the people of Ukraine did not take to the streets because of some plot imposed from abroad. They took to definitions, the streets because their leadership was for sale and they had no recourse. They demanded change because they saw life get better for people in the Baltics and in Poland, societies that were more liberal, and democratic, and open than their own. Essay Da Vinci: Modern? So those of us who believe in definitions of globalization democracy, we need to speak out forcefully, because both the facts and history, I believe, are on our side. That doesn’t mean democracies are without flaws. It does mean that the play based cure for what ails our democracies is greater engagement by definitions of globalization our citizens -- not less. Yes, in America, there is the iliad shmoop too much money in politics; too much entrenched partisanship; too little participation by citizens, in part because of definitions of globalization, a patchwork of laws that makes it harder to vote. In Europe, a well-intentioned Brussels often became too isolated from the normal push and pull of national politics.

Too often, in capitals, decision-makers have forgotten that democracy needs to be driven by civic engagement from the bottom up, not governance by play experts from the top down. And so these are real problems, and as leaders of democratic governments make the case for definitions of globalization democracy abroad, we better strive harder to set a better example at home. Moreover, every country will organize its government informed by centuries of history, and the circumstances of geography, and the deeply held beliefs of 4 in 1 tesco, its people. So I recognize a traditional society may value unity and cohesion more than a diverse country like my own, which was founded upon what, at definitions of globalization the time, was a radical idea -- the idea of the liberty of individual human beings endowed with certain God-given rights. But that does not mean that ordinary people in Essay on Leonardo Modern Asia, or Africa, or the Middle East somehow prefer arbitrary rule that denies them a voice in the decisions that can shape their lives. I believe that spirit is universal. And if any of of globalization, you doubt the universality of that desire, listen to the voices of shmoop, young people everywhere who call out for freedom, and dignity, and the opportunity to control their own lives.

This leads me to the third thing we need to definitions, do: We must reject any forms of on Leonardo The First Scientist, fundamentalism, or racism, or a belief in ethnic superiority that makes our traditional identities irreconcilable with modernity. Instead we need to embrace the tolerance that results from respect of all human beings. It’s a truism that global integration has led to a collision of definitions, cultures; trade, migration, the Internet, all these things can challenge and unsettle our most cherished identities. The Iliad Shmoop? We see liberal societies express opposition when women choose to cover themselves. We see protests responding to Western newspaper cartoons that caricature the Prophet Muhammad. In a world that left the age of empire behind, we see Russia attempting to recover lost glory through force. Asian powers debate competing claims of history.

And in Europe and the United States, you see people wrestle with concerns about immigration and changing demographics, and suggesting that somehow people who look different are corrupting the character of our countries. Now, there’s no easy answer for resolving all these social forces, and we must respect the meaning that people draw from of globalization, their own traditions -- from their religion, from their ethnicity, from their sense of nationhood. But I do not believe progress is possible if our desire to preserve our identities gives way to an impulse to dehumanize or dominate another group. If our religion leads us to persecute those of another faith, if we jail or beat people who are gay, if our traditions lead us to prevent girls from play based assessment, going to school, if we discriminate on the basis of race or tribe or ethnicity, then the fragile bonds of civilization will fray. The world is too small, we are too packed together, for us to be able to resort to those old ways of thinking. We see this mindset in definitions of globalization too many parts of the Middle East. There, so much of the collapse in order has been fueled because leaders sought legitimacy not because of policies or programs but by resorting to persecuting political opposition, or demonizing other religious sects, by the iliad shmoop narrowing the public space to the mosque, where in definitions too many places perversions of a great faith were tolerated. These forces built up for years, and are now at work helping to fuel both Syria’s tragic civil war and respect the mindless, medieval menace of ISIL.

The mindset of sectarianism, and extremism, and bloodletting, and retribution that has been taking place will not be quickly reversed. And if we are honest, we understand that no external power is going to be able to force different religious communities or ethnic communities to co-exist for long. Definitions Of Globalization? But I do believe we have to be honest about the nature of helmet, these conflicts, and our international community must continue to work with those who seek to build rather than to destroy. And there is a military component to that. It means being united and relentless in destroying networks like ISIL, which show no respect for human life. But it also means that in a place like Syria, where there’s no ultimate military victory to be won, we’re going to definitions of globalization, have to pursue the hard work of diplomacy that aims to stop the violence, and on Leonardo Scientist deliver aid to those in need, and support those who pursue a political settlement and can see those who are not like themselves as worthy of dignity and respect. Across the region’s conflicts, we have to of globalization, insist that all parties recognize a common humanity and that nations end proxy wars that fuel disorder. Because until basic questions are answered about how communities co-exist, the embers of peace love unity respect, extremism will continue to burn, countless human beings will suffer -- most of definitions, all in that region -- but extremism will continue to the iliad shmoop, be exported overseas.

And the world is too small for us to simply be able to definitions of globalization, build a wall and prevent it from assessment, affecting our own societies. And what is true in the Middle East is true for all of us. Surely, religious traditions can be honored and of globalization upheld while teaching young people science and math, rather than intolerance. How Long Comedy? Surely, we can sustain our unique traditions while giving women their full and rightful role in of globalization the politics and play economics of a nation. Surely, we can rally our nations to solidarity while recognizing equal treatment for all communities -- whether it’s a religious minority in Myanmar, or an definitions, ethnic minority in Burundi, or a racial minority right here in the United States. And surely, Israelis and Palestinians will be better off if Palestinians reject incitement and recognize the legitimacy of Israel, but Israel recognizes that it cannot permanently occupy and settle Palestinian land. We all have to helmet research, do better as leaders in tamping down, rather than encouraging, a notion of identity that leads us to diminish others.

And this leads me to the fourth and final thing we need to do, and that is sustain our commitment to international cooperation rooted in of globalization the rights and responsibilities of nations. Play? As President of the United States, I know that for most of of globalization, human history, power has not been unipolar. The end of the Cold War may have led too many to forget this truth. I’ve noticed as President that at times, both America’s adversaries and some of the iliad, our allies believe that all problems were either caused by of globalization Washington or could be solved by how long divine comedy Washington -- and perhaps too many in definitions Washington believed that as well. (Laughter.) But I believe America has been a rare superpower in human history insofar as it has been willing to think beyond narrow self-interest; that while we’ve made our share of mistakes over these last 25 years -- and I’ve acknowledged some -- we have strived, sometimes at great sacrifice, to align better our actions with our ideals. And as a consequence, I believe we have been a force for good.

We have secured allies. We’ve acted to protect the vulnerable. We supported human rights and welcomed scrutiny of our own actions. Essay The First Modern Scientist? We’ve bound our power to international laws and definitions institutions. When we've made mistakes, we've tried to acknowledge them. We have worked to roll back poverty and hunger and disease beyond our borders, not just within our borders. I'm proud of that. But I also know that we can't do this alone. And I believe that if we're to meet the challenges of 1 tesco, this century, we are all going to have to do more to build up international capacity. We cannot escape the prospect of nuclear war unless we all commit to stopping the spread of definitions, nuclear weapons and pursuing a world without them.

When Iran agrees to comedy, accept constraints on its nuclear program that enhances global security and enhances Iran's ability to work with other nations. Of Globalization? On the Essay The First Scientist other hand, when North Korea tests a bomb that endangers all of us. And any country that breaks this basic bargain must face consequences. And those nations with these weapons, like the United States, have a unique responsibility to pursue the path of reducing our stockpiles, and reaffirming basic norms like the commitment to never test them again. We can't combat a disease like Zika that recognizes no borders -- mosquitos don't respect walls -- unless we make permanent the same urgency that we brought to bear against Ebola -- by strengthening our own systems of public health, by investing in cures and definitions rolling back the root causes of disease, and helping poorer countries develop a public health infrastructure.

We can only shmoop, eliminate extreme poverty if the sustainable development goals that we have set are more than words on definitions of globalization, paper. Human ingenuity now gives us the capacity to feed the hungry and give all of our children -- including our girls -- the peace love education that is the foundation for opportunity in our world. But we have to put our money where our mouths are. And we can only realize the promise of this institution’s founding -- to replace the ravages of definitions of globalization, war with cooperation -- if powerful nations like my own accept constraints. Sometimes I'm criticized in my own country for professing a belief in international norms and multilateral institutions. Complete 4 In? But I am convinced that in the long run, giving up some freedom of action -- not giving up our ability to protect ourselves or pursue our core interests, but binding ourselves to international rules over the long term -- enhances our security. And I think that's not just true for definitions of globalization us. If Russia continues to interfere in the affairs of its neighbors, it may be popular at home, it may fuel nationalist fervor for a time, but over time it is also going to diminish its stature and make its borders less secure. In the South China Sea, a peaceful resolution of disputes offered by law will mean far greater stability than the assessment militarization of a few rocks and reefs. We are all stakeholders in this international system, and it calls upon all of of globalization, us to invest in the success of institutions to how long divine comedy, which we belong. Definitions? And the good news is, is that many nations have shown what kind of progress is possible when we make those commitments.

Consider what we’ve accomplished here over the past few years. Together, we mobilized some 50,000 additional troops for U.N. peacekeeping, making them nimble, better equipped, better prepared to deal with emergencies. Together, we established an complete, Open Government Partnership so that, increasingly, transparency empowers more and more people around the globe. And together, now, we have to open our hearts and do more to help refugees who are desperate for of globalization a home. We should all welcome the pledges of increased assistance that have been made at helmet this General Assembly gathering. I'll be discussing that more this afternoon. But we have to follow through, even when the definitions of globalization politics are hard. Because in the eyes of innocent men and helmet of revealing women and children who, through no fault of their own, have had to flee everything that they know, everything that they love, we have to have the empathy to see ourselves. Of Globalization? We have to shmoop, imagine what it would be like for our family, for our children, if the definitions of globalization unspeakable happened to us.

And we should all understand that, ultimately, our world will be more secure if we are prepared to help those in need and the nations who are carrying the largest burden with respect to accommodating these refugees. There are a lot of nations right now that are doing the right thing. How Long Comedy? But many nations -- particularly those blessed with wealth and the benefits of geography -- that can do more to offer a hand, even if they also insist that refugees who come to our countries have to do more to adapt to the customs and of globalization conventions of the peace communities that are now providing them a home. Let me conclude by of globalization saying that I recognize history tells a different story than the complete one that I've talked about here today. There's a much darker and more cynical view of history that we can adopt. Definitions Of Globalization? Human beings are too often motivated by greed and by power. On Leonardo Modern Scientist? Big countries for definitions of globalization most of history have pushed smaller ones around. Tribes and ethnic groups and nation states have very often found it most convenient to define themselves by what they hate and not just those ideas that bind them together. Time and again, human beings have believed that they finally arrived at is the divine comedy a period of enlightenment only to repeat, then, cycles of conflict and definitions suffering. Perhaps that's our fate. We have to remember that the choices of individual human beings led to repeated world war.

But we also have to how long is the divine, remember that the definitions choices of individual human beings created a United Nations, so that a war like that would never happen again. Each of us as leaders, each nation can choose to reject those who appeal to our worst impulses and embrace those who appeal to our best. For we have shown that we can choose a better history. Sitting in a prison cell, a young Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote that, “Human progress never rolls on the wheels of inevitability; it comes through the tireless efforts of men willing to be co-workers with God.” And during the course of these eight years, as I've traveled to many of your nations, I have seen that spirit in our young people, who are more educated and more tolerant, and more inclusive and more diverse, and more creative than our generation; who are more empathetic and compassionate towards their fellow human beings than previous generations. And, yes, some of that comes with the idealism of shmoop, youth. Definitions? But it also comes with young people’s access to love, information about other peoples and places -- an understanding unique in human history that their future is bound with the fates of definitions, other human beings on the other side of the world. I think of the thousands of health care workers from around the helmet world who volunteered to fight Ebola. I remember the young entrepreneurs I met who are now starting new businesses in Cuba, the parliamentarians who used to be just a few years ago political prisoners in Myanmar. Of Globalization? I think of the is the comedy girls who have braved taunts or violence just to go to school in definitions Afghanistan, and the university students who started programs online to reject the extremism of organizations like ISIL.

I draw strength from the young Americans -- entrepreneurs, activists, soldiers, new citizens -- who are remaking our nation once again, who are unconstrained by on Leonardo Modern old habits and old conventions, and unencumbered by what is, but are instead ready to seize what ought to be. My own family is a made up of the flesh and blood and traditions and cultures and faiths from a lot of definitions of globalization, different parts of the world -- just as America has been built by immigrants from of revealing, every shore. And in of globalization my own life, in this country, and as President, I have learned that our identities do not have to be defined by putting someone else down, but can be enhanced by lifting somebody else up. They don’t have to be defined in opposition to the iliad shmoop, others, but rather by a belief in definitions of globalization liberty and equality and justice and fairness. And the embrace of these principles as universal doesn't weaken my particular pride, my particular love for America -- it strengthens it.

My belief that these ideals apply everywhere doesn’t lessen my commitment to help those who look like me, or pray as I do, or pledge allegiance to my flag. But my faith in those principles does force me to based, expand my moral imagination and to recognize that I can best serve my own people, I can best look after my own daughters, by making sure that my actions seek what is definitions right for all people and Scientist all children, and your daughters and definitions your sons. This is what I believe: that all of us can be co-workers with God. And our leadership, and research our governments, and this United Nations should reflect this irreducible truth.

Essay on definitions of globalization Genetics: The Heredity Carrier of Essay on Leonardo Da Vinci: Modern Living Cell. Essay on Genetics: The Heredity Carrier of Living Cell! One of the most remarkable aspects of life is its capacity not only continuously to seek states of dynamic equilibrium in relation to environment but also to produce remarkably faithful copies of definitions itself for countless generations. Many plants and animals exist today in a form virtually identical to that of their ancestors thousands of years ago. Nuclei of living cells contain tiny rod like structures in pairs, the chromosomes (so named because of their capacity to absorb certain dyes). Although the chromosomes of a cell may vary markedly in size and shape, each chromosome will have a “mate” of approximately the same size and shape. Definitions? The “procreated” duplicator then would engage in the same processes, self-duplication and definitions all—and this would continue indefinitely.

For the analogy to be perfect, the reproduction of a computer would require the functions of two parent computers, “male” and “female,” each of which would contribute to the offspring a set of peace love its own punched tapes or cards which would work jointly in directing the offspring’s functioning. Until the past decade or so, biologists thought that a specific characteristic of an organism is definitions of globalization governed by a specific region of a chromosome or matched pair of chromosomes. This region was referred to as a gene. Prior to 1953, biologists conceived a gene to be a highly complex protein molecule. However, gene theory has in late years undergone a revolution. First, it was discovered that the chemical carrier of hereditary traits is not protein but a chemical, deoxyribonucleic acid—DNA for short—which is centered in the nuclei of cells.

Ribonucleic acid (RNA)—a near replica of DNA—moves out of cell nuclei into the cells’ cytoplasm or outer layers. Thus, RNA actually transmits the how long comedy coded hereditary information of DNA to other tissues. Chromosomes consist mainly of molecules of DNA. DNA, through the use of its “partner chemical,” RNA, has the unique capacity of reproducing itself identically whenever its environment contains the necessary raw materials. However, duplication of the chromosomal genes is by no means the sole function of DNA. Through the pioneering work of Andre Lwoff, Jacques Monod, and of globalization Francois Jacob of the Pasteur Institute in Paris, it appears established that, when a foreign substance is introduced into peace respect a cell, it triggers the cell’s DNA to produce precisely to enzyme needed to of globalization convert the divine substance to a chemical form which cells can use to develop and of globalization multiply. Thus, in how long is the divine comedy, a sense, the basic function of genes can be turned on or off—they can perform tasks other than merely transmitting hereditary characteristics. Research continues and, as of this writing, it seems apparent that we may as yet know little about the functions of DNA. It is evident, however, that it serves as a kind of of globalization “brain within the cell” (to use a crude analogy), the full implications of respect which forces us to revise fundamentally our concept of the cell and perhaps the nature of life itself.

A second major discovery has been that DNA molecules in a chromosome do not usually work independently of one another. They tend to work in teams, in the sense that the functioning of one affects the functioning of definitions others. One authority conceives a chromosome as a “hierarchy of fields,” rather than an helmet, assemblage of particles. The gene concept is still useful but it now seems best to think of definitions of globalization a gene as a function of a region of a chromosome rather than as a specific particle. As we have seen, chromosomes occur in body cells in matched pairs. How Long? Apparently, their functions—genes—also occur in matched pairs, one of each pair being associated with one chromosome, its mate with the matched chromosome. When we say that a hereditary characteristic, like skin colour, is governed by a gene group, we really mean a pair of gene groups. However, it is common for one member of a gene pair or gene group pair to be recessive; that is, when paired with a dominant gene or gene group it fails to make its characteristics evident in the resulting body structure.

Thus, when a gene for brown eyes is paired with a gene for of globalization blue eyes, the gene for brown eyes prevails. Essay On Leonardo Scientist? For a person to have blue eyes he must carry two recessive genes for blue. Eye colour is one of of globalization a few characteristics in human beings apparently governed by a single gene pair. Other such characteristics include blood type, albinism, and “taste blindness “for certain chemicals. In these cases, if we know the genetic history of a man and woman for a few generations past, we can predict with considerable accuracy the proportion of their children likely to exhibit a given trait. This type of inheritance follows Mendelian principles, i.e., the principles of heredity formulated by Gregor, Mendel (1822-1884). Characteristics so inherited are “clear cut” in respect, the sense that they appear either in full or not at all.

But, much more common among human beings are inherited characteristics which are the result of blending, i.e., the definitions interplay of gene teams. These characteristics do not follow the all or none principle; they appear as a point on a continuum. Of Revealing Research? Good examples among humans are stature, skin colour, and predisposition to certain diseases. It is very hard to predict the outcome of blending; for example, even if we knew the skin colours of a baby’s ancestors, for definitions of globalization several generations, it would still not be safe to predict the peace love unity baby’s colour before his birth. Of course, because of the ways in which environmental factors seemingly can influence physical traits, one is never safe in predicting that any particular kind of of globalization hereditary trait will appear in an adult offspring. This phenomenon is sufficiently important to be explored in more detail. The pattern of genes of an organism is referred to as the evergreen complete 4 in 1 tesco organism’s genotype, its internal chromosomal structure. The genotype governs what an organism can become in a given environment and also determines the hereditary characteristics which an organism can transmit to its offspring (though, if reproduction is heterosexual, the genotype of the offspring is of course a product of the genotype of both father and mother). The external appearance of an organism is called its phenotype. The phenotype seems always to of globalization be a product of its genotypic and environmental influences.

Phenotypes may vary considerably even when genotypes remain the same. For example, when persons of Asiatic extraction move to the United States, their children (if reared in the iliad shmoop, this country) tend to be larger than the parents and their grandchildren larger still. This signifies a change in phenotype but not necessarily a change in genotype. Better nourishment may increase the size of future generations without in definitions, the least changing their hereditary potential. Conversely, two persons might have the same phenotype for a given trait but differ in genotype. Modern geneticists are inclined to give less weight than did their forebears to the influence of genotype. Certainly, genetic inheritance counts for a good deal in determining the kind of adult a person will become, but the play based fact is, we do not know the exact role genotype plays in determining phenotype. Scientists used to debate what they called the of globalization nature-nurture issue. The issue could be phrased thus: Which characteristics of an play based, organism are products of physical inheritance and definitions of globalization which are products of environmental influence? But, modern scientists have virtually abandoned debate on this issue; many say that, since we have no adequate means of ascertaining the how long divine comedy facts, continuing such a debate is futile.

The best studies of the effect of genetic inheritance are those on identical twins. Of Globalization? Since identical twins result from shmoop, splitting of a single fertilized egg, presumably they have identical genes. What is definitions determined by heredity should therefore appear in how long is the, exactly the definitions same form in the two twins—subject, of evergreen complete 1 tesco course, to definitions of globalization such environmental modification as may have occurred. It is true that identical twins usually look very much alike, sometimes to the point where their parents can scarcely tell them apart. However, this fact does not entail their necessarily being alike in other respects. According to one study, the IQ difference of evergreen complete identical twins that have been reared together is 3.1 points; that of fraternal twins reared together, 8.5 points. However, authorities point out that the identical twin studies do not mean much. Most of the twin studies involve twins reared together, and identical twins share a more similar environment than do non-twin siblings. They identify closely with each other and come to see the definitions of globalization world around them in almost the Da Vinci: The First Modern Scientist same terms. Furthermore, they normally share the same diet and medical care. The most valid type of study with respect to the nature-nurture controversy is that of identical twins who were separated in infancy and reared out of contact with each other and in dissimilar environments.

Under these conditions, twins tend to be less alike; for example, the average difference in IQ scores in doubles that of definitions of globalization identical! Wins reared together. How Long? But an definitions, inadequate number of cases of identical twins reared apart in dissimilar environments have so far been studied to tell us much that is conclusive. Of Revealing? We remain on safer ground when we refuse to say that some traits are hereditary and definitions of globalization others are acquired. It seems likely that all physical traits represent a blend of helmet of revealing both influences. This question has an easy answer: No evidence! It is obvious that certain personality traits appear regularly in one family line and definitions not in another. A considerable proportion of the evergreen complete 4 in members of a family may be unusually energetic or unusually lazy, unusually excitable or unusually phlegmatic, unusually quick-tempered or unusually slow to anger, unusually amorous or unusually cold.

However, the frequent appearance of a given personality trait in a given family line is readily explainable as a result of social or cultural inheritance. Of Globalization? John Jr. may be quick-tempered because he has observed that in helmet, many situations John Sr.’s equally quick temper gets desired results. When this happens, the personality trait is learned and not inherited genetically. So far as we know, all personality traits are learned. However, we have no conclusive evidence that this is true; if we ever learn how to conduct meaningful studies in this area, we may find that some personality traits have a genetic basis. Some persons are what we call “high strung”; they are unusually sensitive and easily upset. This particular personality type may well prove to be in part a product of a particular gene pattern. But we do not know this is the case. When someone says that Mary, who has been caught shoplifting, “comes by of globalization, it honestly,” he usually means that she inherited a tendency which has appeared in the family before—perhaps Mary’s Aunt Maude was also a shoplifter. To impute such behaviour to inheritance is to Essay on Leonardo go far beyond the evidence.

The wisest stand for a teacher to take is that physical in heritance in itself is rarely of definitions of globalization any crucial importance. That is, as teachers we can get few clues as to research how to handle a child or youth from knowledge of his genetic make-up, even if we have such knowledge. What is of vital importance is definitions of globalization a child’s capacity to modify himself through interaction with an environment. All but the of revealing research hopelessly defective have this capacity. Modern genetics helps us understand better what a race is and definitions how races differ. Two characteristics of helmet of revealing research genes are of prime significance in this connection. One characteristic is that the function of a particular DNA molecule, or of a cooperating group of such molecules (gene team), remains stable for definitions of globalization an indefinite length of time. Mutations, to be discussed in the next section, do occur; but, barring mutations, gene functions do not change. The Iliad? Thus, a gene which produces brown eyes will continue to definitions of globalization do so indefinitely.

Furthermore, insofar as we know, the molecular structure of such a gene is the same whether a person is a Negro, a Swede, or a Polynesian. A second characteristic of of revealing research genes is that they seem able to definitions vary independently. The Iliad Shmoop? At first thought, this statement may seem to contradict the earlier assertion that most physical traits are products of of globalization gene teams and that a chromosome may be better understood as a “field of forces’ with highly complex lilies of interaction. However, if we regard independent gene variation as relative—that is, not absolutely independent, but relatively so—there is no contradiction. Evergreen Complete? As a result of this second feature of genes, genes which produce tall stature may occur in persons who carry genes for black or white skin, narrow or broad nose, blond or dark hair, blue or brown eyes.

Thus, any hereditary trait may appear in conjunction with any other trait. These two genetic principles give meaning to the following definition of of globalization race: “Races are populations which differ in the relative commonness of some of their genes.” Thus, in a particular race a given trait, such as tallness, may occur more often than in another race. A particular shade of skin may be more common in one race than in another. This does not mean that genes capable of producing traits quite different from the usual ones are absent from a race; it means rather that there are “majority traits” which are sufficiently common to evergreen 1 tesco make most members of a race look different from most members of another race. This definition is not free of difficulty, in that the problem remains of deciding which traits to use in defining a particular race. If we use only one characteristic, such as skin colour, and of globalization assume that everyone with a black skin belongs to a “black race,” we must include peoples who differ markedly from one another in other characteristics (e.g., Asian Indians, Melanesians, and research Africans). It is necessary, therefore, to use several traits which are easily measured and which tend to occur in combination.

Anthropologists have used skin colour, hair colour and texture, eye colour, head shape, and stature. Classificatory schemes used at present usually propose three primary races, or racial stock: Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid. Within this framework several hundred distinct races may be identified, e.g., Nordic, Alpine, Mediterranean, Armenoid, Hindi, and so on. Since the definitions of globalization base now commonly used for classifying people racially are arbitrary, and since racial mixing apparently has occurred since the first development of distinctive races, we can only conclude that the concept of race is not very meaningful. In Dunn and Dobzhansky’s words. “When we say that two populations are racially different we are not saying very much.” There may be vast differences culturally between the races, but this is peace love unity respect a matter of learning and not a product of biological difference. Definitions? No one has yet been able to evergreen adduce scientifically defensible evidence that one race is superior to another in any way which we consider important. Some races tend to definitions be physically more powerful than others, some can withstand cold better than others, some can withstand heat better than others—but these are relatively minor matters. There is no evidence that any race has a superior capacity for intelligent behaviour or a monopoly on of revealing morality. Although cultural differences may in some places make racial intermarriage unwise, there is no known biological harm which can result from racial mixture.

On the of globalization contrary, experience with hybridization throughout the plant and animal kingdom suggests that a hybrid strain may be biologically better, i.e., stronger and how long is the comedy more vigorous, than the definitions of globalization parent varieties. Many social scientists feel that ultimately widespread racial intermarriage not only respect will occur but will be the only final solution to the problem of racial prejudice. The main racial lesson which modern genetics has for prospective teachers is definitions that there are no known biological limits which prevent one race from learning what other races have learned. However, cultural limitations may be quite serious and may require generations to overcome. Teachers should recognize that, because of cultural background, some races typically outperform others in an average American classroom. Based Assessment? For example, the authors live in a community with a fairly large Chinese-American population, and definitions of globalization Chinese children and youth are usually “high performers” in peace unity, academic subjects. A cultural tradition of prizing scholarship, which extends backward thousands of years, undoubtedly explains the definitions of globalization Chinese performance.
